We are located in the small town of Deroche in the North Fraser Valley of beautiful British Columbia, Canada. Our interest in the breed started in 1979 and we have been breeding Chinese Shar Pei since 1983. Coat Color And Grooming
A quintessential Shar-Pei characteristic second only to his wrinkles is his bristly coat. It stands straight up, like a 1950s butch-style hairdo, and varies in length, from a really short “horse” coat to a longer “brush” coat. You can find it in many colors, including solid black, cream, fawn, red, sable, and blue. He sheds minimally.
While the Shar-Pei is a naturally clean dog with very little odor, he needs only a little grooming to keep him looking good. A thorough brushing once a week with a rubber curry or grooming mitt is sufficient to remove dead hair and dirt. He doesn’t need to be bathed a lot, about every 12 weeks if he hasn’t been rolling in the mud. Frequent baths tend to irritate his skin.
Brushing and bathing are the easy parts of grooming the Shar-Pei. The difficult, but essential, part is getting him dry after a bath. If you don’t dry the folds and wrinkles completely, you can expect a yeast or fungal infection. Wipe thoroughly between the folds with a dry towel to eliminate all moisture.
Brush your Shar-Pei’s teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside it. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath.
His ears should be checked weekly for redness or a bad odor, which can indicate an infection. When you check your dog’s ears, wipe them out with a cotton ball dampened with gentle, pH-balanced ear cleaner to help prevent infections.

What Is A Miniature Shar
A miniature Shar-Pei is a purebred Chinese Shar-Pei that represents the original size of the breed. It wasn’t until the breed gained American Kennel Club recognition that the 18 to 20-inch size range became the standard. Breeders of what is now commonly thought of as the “mini” simply chose to continue breeding the original size Shar-Pei, which measures 17 inches or less at the shoulders and weighs between 25 to 40 pounds.
This breed was originally developed in China in 200 B.C., and came to include a mix of the Chow Chow, Bulldog, Mastiff, and terrier. As the Mastiff began to emerge, this breed grew in size over time. Most people aren’t aware that the miniature Shar-Pei is probably closer to the original type for this breed.
Those who are breeding what is now known as the miniature Shar Pei are actually breeding the more accurate representation of this breed. The larger breed was more well known at the time it was registered with the club, and thus the standard was set. Keep this in mind and discuss a dog’s size with your breeder to better understand the standard.

The Shar-Pei is a devoted family dog who is protective of his family, including children. To best teach him to get along with kids, he should be raised with them if he doesn’t live with them, he should be exposed to children as he grows up. Because he is such an independent breed, he’s best suited to families with children 10 and older who know how to treat a pet respectfully.
As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he’s eating or sleeping or to try to take the dog’s food away. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child.
In order to provide the best chances for getting along with other dogs and animals, the Shar-Pei should be raised with them from an early age. Since he tends to be aggressive with other canines, supervision is essential.

Are Miniature Shar
Shar-Peis have received some bad press related to biting when they are nervous, stressed, or fearful. Generally, this tendency is no more predominant in this breed than in any other dog. Since the breed was originally developed for fighting, they do have a tendency to not do well in homes with other dogs, particularly with same-sex pairings. They also have a prey drive and may not be a good fit for a home with cats or small pets.

The Shar-Pei is an ancient dog breed that originated in China and dates back to the Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago. They were native to Chinas southern provinces. Unlike the Pug, they were not known as a noble companion. Instead, the Shar-Pei was considered a commoners dog.
In particular, they were primarily used by Chinese farmers as all-around farm dogs. These wrinkly, unique dogs were prized for their intelligence, rugged versatility, and fierce loyalty. Shar-Pei could often be found working simultaneously as herders and protectors on the farm, as hunting dogs, and as family companions.
In 1949, the Peoples Republic of China was established. Because dog ownership was frowned upon under this regime, many dogs were systematically slaughtered. As a result, many of the mainlands purebred dogs were almost wiped out of existence. Thankfully, a few good Shar-Pei breeding pairs were preserved in Taiwan and Hong Kong. And so, the breed was able to survive and then thrive.
Although the first documented appearance of the Shar-Pei in the United States occurred in the mid-1960s, they did not start to gain popularity until 1973. This was the year that Matgo Law, a breeder in Hong Kong, appealed to breeders and dog fans in the United States to help save the Shar-Pei from extinction.
A fully-grown Shar-Pei usually stands 18-20 inches tall and weighs 45-60 pounds.
A Shar-Pei generally lives 8-12 years.
